Just south of Puri, the sea mixes with the 1100 sq.km inland Chilika Lake to create the largest brackish water lake in Asia. These shallow waters enclose an immense area of marshes, lowlands, and islands. It abounds with a variety of fish, crabs, prawns throughout the year and migratory birds make it their home in Winter (November through March). This brackish water lake attracts around 150 species of migratory birds every year during winter and hence is a bird-watcher's paradise. It is an interesting world of around 158 different species aquatic & wild life including insects, mollusks, fishes, prawns, amphibians, reptiles, birds and animals. Limbless skink, a rare reptile which was discovered for the first time from loose soil, attaches much significance to this place. The Lake is dotted with a number of islands. The Island of Nalabana, 8 km in circumference occupies a unique place in the vast expanse of Chilika Lake as it happens to be a sanctuary and the central refuge point for the migratory birds. Kalijai Island is the abode of Goddess Kalijai, venerated by the local fisher folks. This island plays host to a huge fair on 'Makar Sankranti' held annually in the month of January. The large fishing community adds flavor to the lake. Rajhansa Island near the confluence of the lake and sea (New Mouth) offers a fantastic beach. The Irawady Dolphins can be seen palyfully cavorting in the channels approching the sea mouth near Satapada. Some of the Islands bears romantic names like Honeymoon Island and Breakfast Island. Chilika is worth visiting round the year.However, the winter months, when the air reverberates with the din of the birds, are the nicest times. Barkul, Rambha, Balugaon and Satpada are the bases for visiting Chilika, where boats can be hired. How to Reach - | |
| Chilika can be visited through many points but the most convenient ones are Balugaon, Barkul, Rambha (all on NH 5 between Bhubaneswar and Berhampur) and Satpada close to Puri. |
| By Air - The nearest airport is at Bhubaneswar, 98 kms. from Balugaon, 105 kms from Barkul and , 130 kms from Rambha, 108 kms from Satapada. For details click here |
| By Rail - The nearest railhead is at Balugaon for Barkul (6kms), Puri for Satapada (50kms). Rambha is also a railhead. Bhubaneswar is yet another convenient railhead for visiting Chilika Lake. For details click here |
By Road - Barkul,Balugoan and Rambha are situated on National Highway No.5. Regular buses ply between Berhampur and Bhubaneswar, which stop at Rambha and Balugoan. Tourists can avail of auto rickshaws and taxi from both these places and reach the lake in a short while. The Lake can also be enjoyed from Satpada, 50 kms. from Puri. Regular bus service and also conducted tour service from Puri to Satapada is available. |

Narayani- Goddess Narayani adorns the valley hill-top which is girdled by a stream. It is an ideal picnic spot. It is about 5 kms. from Barkul, 22 kms from Rambha and 11kms from Balugaon. |
Nirmaljhara- Nirmaljhara has earned its name as an ideal place for picnic as well as pilgrimage. A stream that emerges out from the feet of a Vishnu image enhances the importance and sanctity of the place. It is 11 kms from Rambha, 23 kms from Barkul and 29 kms from Balugaon. |
Banpur- Once the capital of Sailodvaba dynasty, responsible for the construction of the early group of temples in Bhubaneswar, Banpur is a famed Shakti-pitha of Goddess Bhagabati. A large number of Buddhist images discovered at Banpur relate the place to the Vajrayan cult of Buddhism. The temple of "Dakshya Prajapati" is a fine specimen of sculptural excellence of Orissan art. |

| This part-salty and part-fresh water lake attracts around 150 species of migratory birds every year during winter and hence is a bird-watcher's paradise. This natural habitat of varied species of flora harbors the 'aquatic vegetation' of its own by providing refuge to many extinct species. The dunes and sandy areas of the beaches by the lake have the floral composition of their own, favored in the conditions they offer. The water and the land go hand in hand to create a new world for around 158 different species of entities, including insects, mollusks, fishes, prawns, amphibians, reptiles, birds and animals. Limbless skink, a rare reptile which was discovered for the first time in 1917 from loose soil, attaches much significance to this place. One can always spot a dolphin or two here, while keeping a lookout for Siberian cranes, especially near the sand bar where the lake runs into the sea. So to enjoy the trip up to its brim, it is a good idea to hire a boat. |

You can also hire a sea kayak from Orissa Tourism's Water Sports Complex (WSC) to explore the Nalabana Island. Country boats are also available at Balugaon. |

Do's and Don'ts - | |
| Rules for lakes: |
| 1. Do not make noise while watching the birds / animals. You are visiting the lake for watching the them, not disturbing them. |
| 2. You need to be extra careful in case you are going for bird watching during the breeding season of the birds. |
| 3. Never ever touch the eggs of the birds and do not even venture around the nest for too long. |
| 4. Birdcalls / animal sounds should never be used for attracting the birds / animals. It causes unnecessary confusion and disturbance amongst them. |
| 5. Follow all the rules as well as the instructions given at the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Export of most wildlife and their products is either banned or strictly regulated. |
| 6. Do not litter while inside the lake or on the shores. It is advisable to carry the trash back with you and put it in a dust bin on the main land. Help keep the lake pollution-free. |
| 7. Please enter the Sanctuary area only after taking the necessary permits and follow all the rules. |
| 8. Don't chase the dolphins. Instead stay anchored without making any noise at some spot in the dolphin area. In this way you can watch more dolphins. |
| 9. Respect the wild animals / birds and maintain a safe distance from them. Preferably use a binocular for better a view from a distance. Remember, you are in their home and they get first priority. |
| 10. Switch off your stereo or transistor. The quieter you are, the more the chances of your seeing wildlife / birds. |
| 11. Wear dull-colored clothes. Bright colors alarm most wild animals and they flee. |
| 12. Don't carry guns or other weapons. Feel free to shoot with a camera instead. |
