Mahendragiri (125 km)* - Amidst rich scenic beauty of the evergreen forest, Mahendragiri, 5000 feet high stands in its unrivalled glory in the Gajapati District. The hill is associated with mythological stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. It finds mention in the works of poets Kalidas and Radhanath Ray. The rivulet Mahendra Tanaya flows down the hill with her usual trickling note. Archaeological remains at Mahendragiri make an interesting study for the scholars. Sivaratri is the main festival here which draws large crowd from Orissa, Andhra and Chhatisgarh. Mahendragiri can be approached from Parlakhemundi which is frequented with bus services from Berhampur via Taptapani(125 KM.) and R. Udaygiri(176 Km). One can go from Parlakhemundi to Burkhat pass via Kainpur(51 Km) and finally trek to the Mahendragiri hill top (10Km) on foot. On the way one can see some of the oldest temples dedicated to the Panchapandav and their mother Kunti. |

Tampara (15 km)* - Right on the National Highway No.5, opposite Chhatrapur, is the beautiful Tampara Lake with gentle waves breaking on the shore, Tampara offers great avenues for water sports. One can also take a leisurely stroll trhough the vast stretches of Cashew plantations along the shore. | Thakurani Yatra |
| Thakurani Yatra is considered the most typical and famous amongst all the folk festival celebrated in the District. The yatra takes place bi-annually at Berhampur and Chatrapur by rotaion and once in 12 years at Kabisuryanagar. Usually the Thajurani yatra is observed in the month of May. The priest Desha Behera invites Goddess Thakurani as his daughter, who comes in the form of flower which is placed in a pot and carried by a woman on her head followed by other women. The procession moves from street to street in the evening every day, which is accompanied by musical instrumebnts of trumpet, Kahali, ghanta, Sankha and different kinds of folk dances. This process goes on for about a month. |
