Thick and green forests, extensive grassy lands and meadows, cloud kissing peaks, precipitous and sparkling waterfalls, meandering rivers, roaring tigers and trumpeting tuskers, fleeing deer and flying squirrels, talking myna and dancing peacocks make Simlipal a dreamland of Nature in the wilderness and an irresistible destination. Covering a vast area of 2750 sq. km out of which 303 sq. km from the core area, thick biosphere reserve is a sanctuary and one of the Tiger Projects and National parks of India. With wide range of rain fall and foliage variations from deciduous to moist green forests, it is suitable to different species of flora and fauna. About 1076 species of mammals, 29 types of reptiles and 231 species of birds are the proud possession of this plateau. Average mean elevation of Simlipal is 900 meters. Tall and luxuriant Sal Trees in large numbers stand like sentries. The handsome peaks of Khairiburu (1178 meters), Meghasani (1158 meters) and others welcome like smiling receptionists from the emerald heights. Sweet scented Champak flowers freshen the air. The richly hued orchids on the green foliage are soothing to the eyes. In the midst of the dense forests, the summer stands humbled and the sun gets lost. Several rivers like Budhabalanga, Khairi, Salandi; Palpala, etc. originate from the hills and meander through the forest like veins and arteries in the body. Many of them have formed cascading rapids and foaming falls before leaving for the plains. The panoramic view of the waterfalls at Barehipani (400 meters) and joranda (150 meters) are simply enchanting of fish, is found in abundance in most of the rivers. The silence of Simlipal is occasionally broken by the chirping of the birds to an avian delight. The dense forest and riverside system serve as an excellent home to some of the most beautiful creatures of the World. To stay with them, even for a while, is a thrilling experience. Herds of elephants majestically walking across the roads and rivulets could be a regular sight. While you are moving on the hilly tracts, predators like Tiger and Leopards might be obliviously lulling under the shade with their own thoughts. If lucky, you could spot them there, or else see them around the saltlicks at places like Chahala. Forget the apprehensive dear at Simlipal is at its natural best. Day visitors can enter between 6 AM & 12 Noon and visitors with reservation between 6 AM & 2 PM. Simlipal remains open from 1st November to 15th June only.Best time to visit Simplipal Tiger Reserve The reserve is open from November to June.

| By Road : Baripada, the district headquarters of Mayurbhanj, on the junction of NH 5 and 6, is 270 km from Bhubaneswar, 240 from Kolkata and 60 km from Balasore and 22 km from Pithabata, which is an entry point. The other entry point Jashipur is 94 km from Baripada on N.H. 6. Both the places are well connected by regular bus services. Taxis and Jeeps are available. |

Kuchai (8 km)* - The excavated pre-historic site of Kuchai is known for yielding NeolitClose by one could find a plethora of temple, a few of them hic possession of man. Potteries found with Neolithic implements speak of the occurrence of Mesolithic industry of the Later Stone, Age in Mayurbhanj districts. This place is on the way from Baripada to Simlipal, frequent bus services are available. |
Kuliana (18 km)* - Kuliana is rich with Paleolithic artifices. This place is also on the way from Baripada to Simlipal bus services are available. |
Haripur (16 km)* - Haripur, the former capital of Mayurbhanj State was founded by Maharaja Harihar Bhanj in the year 1400 A.D. The magnificent brick temple of Rasikaraya is regarded as a vestige of the glorious deeds of the Bhanjs. A little north of the courtyard of Rsikaraya, lies the ruins of Ranihansapura or the inner apartment of the queen. Close by stands the brick made rectangular temple of Radhamohan. The temple of Jagannath also stands nearby which is built in Goudiya style of architecture during the reign of Harihara Bhanja. |
Khiching (149 km)* - Khiching is famous for the temple of Kichakeswari, the family Goddess of the once ruling chiefs of Mayurbhanj. Built entirely on chlorite slabs, the temple of Kichakeswari is perhaps one of the few temples of its kind in the whole of India. Close by one could find a plethora of temple, a few of them are still living which bear testimony to the skill of the master masons of Kalinga style. The small museum at Khiching possesses rare and historically valuable specimens of art and sculpture. |
Jashipur (94 km)* - Located on NH 6 Jashipur is an entry point to Simplipal Tiger Reserve The Crocodile rearing center at Ramatirtha near Jashpur is its added attraction. From Baripada the road communication to Jashipur is very good and frequent bus services are available. Visitors to Simlipal can avail the accommodation in Rest Guest Houses and Private Hotels. |
Samibrukshya (60 km)* - The peak of the hill about 500 feet high located to the south of village Podadiha is known as Samibrukshya. On its western side there are five caves which look like rooms. Legend would have it that the Pandavas of epic fame hid their arms in these caves before proceeding to the court of King Birat. A large gathering takes place on the Baruni day which falls in Chaitra for taking sacred bath in the nearby stream. |
Deokund (55 kms)- A beautiful scenic spot Deokund is located about 33 km from Udala. Deokund is a part of Simlipal hill range. The temple of Goddess Ambika on the top of the hill is the attraction of the place. There is a waterfall about 50 feet high which made a reservoir close to the temple, known as Kunda. The clam and quiet atmosphere of this place attracts the group picnickers in a large number. As the spot is not connected with bus services. Visitors are advised to take hire vehicles from or Baripada. |
Rairangapur (82 km)* - The modern Jagannath Temple is the major attraction of Rairangapur. Chariot Festival (Ratha Yatra) is the biggest festival here, which draws a large crowd. Rairangapur is located on Baripada Tata Nagar Road connected with regular bus services. |
Manatri (44 km)* - Manjitri is famous for the shrine of Kakharua Baidyanath (Lord Shiva). Surrounded by water Channels on three sides, the scenic beauty of the place with the temple attracts visitors round the year. Sivaratri (Feb-March) is the biggest festival observed here which continues for ten days, draws a large crowd. Connected with good motorable road, bus services are available up to Boisinga (12 km). |
Bhimakunda (162 km)* - 40 km from Karanjia Bhimakund (the sacred Pool) can be located near Booring village in the river Vaitarani. The calm and serene atmosphere of the place also attracts the group picnickers. The legend reveals that during the incognito life of the Pandavas in Biratnagar Bhima, the seemed Pandava used to take his bath on the pool. Here river Vaitarani flows through a gorge in steps forming a seres of picturesque rapids until it settles down in the pool called Bhimakunda. The place is connected with all weather motor able road. No direct bus service is available to the center. It is also negotiable from Keonjahar side 20 km from Dhenkikote on State High way No 11. |
Baripada - The district head quarter town serves as the most convenient base for touring the various place of interest in the district of Mayurbhanj. The Jagannath Temple and the Ambika Temple, the palace of ex Maharaja and Jubilee library are some of the attraction of the town. The place is also famous for its colourful festival `Chaitra Parva or the Chhou Dance festival. Pulling of the Chariot of Devi Subhadra by the ladies only is the unique feature of Baripada Ratha Yatra.

Do's and Don'ts - | |
| 1. Do not make noise while watching the birds / animals. You are visiting the national park/sanctuary for watching the birds, not disturbing them. |
| 2. You need to be extra careful in case you are going for bird watching during the breeding season of the birds. |
| 3. Never ever touch the eggs of the birds and do not even venture around the nest for too long. |
| 4. Birdcalls / animal sounds should never be used for attracting the birds / animals. It causes unnecessary confusion and disturbance amongst them. |
5. Follow all the rules as well as the instructions given at the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Export of most wildlife and their products is either banned or strictly regulated. Export of the few permissible items - even as passengers' personal luggage, is permitted only under an appropriate export permit. Insist on getting a certificate for the legitimate sale of a particular animal product and permission for its export to avoid inconvenience at the time of departure. |
| 6. Do not litter while inside the park/sanctuary. It is advisable to carry the trash back with you and put it in a rubbish bin. |
| 7. Please enter the Park only after taking the necessary permits and follow all the rules. |
| 8. Drive slowly in the Park. In this way you can see, observe and enjoy the most, without disturbing the wildlife. |
| 9. Respect the wild animals and maintain a safe distance from them. Remember, you are in their home and they get first priority. |
| 10. Switch off your car stereo or transistor. The quieter you are, the more the chances of your seeing wildlife. |
| 11. Wear dull-colored clothes. Bright colors alarm most wild animals and they flee. |
| 12. Don't carry guns or other weapons. Feel free to shoot with a camera instead. |
| 13. Do not smoke or light campfires in the forest. Accidental fires can destroy this wonderful jungle in no time. |
| 14. Don't get off your vehicle at any point in the Park except where it's allowed. This is for your own safety and the safety of wildlife. |
| 15. Help keep the park pollution-free. While inside the park, please put your entire non-biodegradable litter (tin cans, plastic, glass bottles, metal foils etc.) into the bag provided and dispose it off on your way out. |
| 16. Keep to the specified roads and trails. Driving off track you may trample growing trees and cause disturbance to resting animals and their young. |
